Are you passionate about serving those who are most in need? Are you committed to working for your fellow citizens? Are you a believer in working towards creative and innovative solutions to society's most vexing problems? If so, a Residential Counselor or Shelter Counselor position may be for you.

Most DESC clients live with challenges that would seem overwhelming or insurmountable to the average person: mental illness, drug and alcohol addictions, HIV, physical or developmental disabilities, and extreme poverty. In most cases, they are not affected by just one of these conditions, but are multiply disabled and have long histories of homelessness or frequent failures in other low-income housing settings. To increase their opportunity for success, residents in each of our housing sites have access to 24-hour a day, 7 days a week supportive services. Our Residential Counselor staff provide and support these services while our Shelter Counselors deliver critical survival services to Seattle's most vulnerable homeless adults.

DESC invites you to apply today to attend our hiring fair! Qualified candidates will be screened over the phone, and if selected will be given the time and location of the hiring fair. Once at the fair, candidates will have the opportunity to tour a DESC project, learn about what makes DESC unique, and participate in a Q&A with staff members during the interview process.

Qualified candidates will have:

• At least one year paid or volunteer experience in human services, preferably working with adults challenged by economic disadvantages, homelessness, mental illness and/or chemical dependency.

• Basic understanding of homelessness and various characteristics of homeless adult population; experience with the issues of mental illness and chemical dependency preferred.

• Available to start within three weeks of the date of the hiring fair.

• Be able to provide at least one reference or references from a year's worth of work experience, from someone who can talk about your work in a supervisory capacity.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER

DESC is committed to diversity in the workplace, and promotes equal employment opportunities for all staff members and applicants. The Agency will not discriminate against any employee or applicant for employment on the basis of race, creed, color, sex, sexual orientation, age, national origin, marital status, or the presence of any sensory, mental or physical disability in any employment practice, unless based on a bona fide occupational qualification. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.
