The role

We are seeking a Scientist with a passion for Pets and one who can share in our mission of strengthening the bond between all pets and their families by developing innovative, trustworthy, and affordable products!

The Senior Scientist is responsible for formulation development through commercialization of new and improved chemical pet products. The primary focus of this position will be on shampoo, spray, and topical drop formulations for use in pet grooming, and flea and tick control applications. This position is located at our Carlstadt, NJ technical center.

What you will do

  • Responsible for all steps of chemical formula development from ideation, to first production with minimal oversight

  • Identifies and develops new innovation and technologies by working closely with cross-functional teams, as well as raw material suppliers and contract manufacturers to meet the needs of marketing, consumers, and their pets

  • Works with procurement on securing new sources of ingredients for incorporation into both new and existing formulations, which increase value and maintain or enhance quality

  • Monitors the development of multiple laboratory formulation projects to meet budgets and timelines

  • Assists in the design of stability protocols and conducts thorough stability tests

  • Participates in cross-functional team meetings to convey R&D test results, hurdles, project status, and timing

  • Determines finished product specifications and develops batching procedures

  • Works closely with Analytical Chemists and Biological Sciences to ensure all appropriate product evaluations are completed

  • Shepherds new and improved products through scale-up and commercialization

  • Provides brand support for assigned products

  • Responsible for maintaining a clean and safe work environment at all times

  • Interact with marketing, scientific services, and regulatory teams in the evaluation of new product ideas

  • Serves as a member of the Hartz docket team for label review and approval

What you will bring

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Cosmetic Science, or related Health/Animal Science

  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in personal/pet care formulations; or a Master's Degree with 3 years' experience in personal/pet care formulations

  • Experience working with insecticides, fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes is a plus

  • Demonstrated ability in formulation development, stability studies, and establishment of ingredient and finished product specifications

  • Understanding of scientific computations and record keeping, including maintaining a laboratory notebook

  • Familiarity with Good Laboratory Practices (GMP's), Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) product regulations, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

  • Experience and knowledge of shampoo and/or skin care ingredients in health products. Surfactant chemistry is a plus

  • Must have experience with basic scientific instruments used in a formulation's lab: (pH meter, viscometer, balances, moisture analyzer)

  • Prior experience working with formulation software

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office

  • Creative problem solving and communication skills

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as work in a team environment

  • Ability to travel on an as-needed basis to manufacturing facilities and professional meetings
