Our grounds team is also responsible for 7 working greenhouses, a compost facility that processes 300 cubic yards of yard waste, and setting up over 1 million (mostly LED) twinkling lights for Holiday Magic. The Groundskeeper Aide (Temporary Full Time) performs a variety of Grounds Department duties and functions with a high degree of efficiency, contributing to the Society’s overarching goals of extraordinary guest experience and financial sustainability.

The primary duties and responsibilities:

Perform general park duties, landscape maintenance, and horticulture as assigned. Maintain work records as directed. Occasionally, direct work of seasonal staff as assigned during specific tasks. Report performance to supervisor as necessary. Observe standard safety procedures and the use of safety equipment and ensure adherence to safety protocols and requirements. To include: (1) Perform horticultural duties including the care of trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants, planting, watering, weeding, mulching, propagation, tilling, lawn care, pruning, plant protection from hazardous conditions, pest control, and other horticultural duties as assigned. (2) Perform general park duties including waste disposal, manure collection and disposal, recyclables collection, snowplowing, construction activities, equipment maintenance and repair, installation and maintenance of irrigation systems, road repairs, and other general park duties as assigned. (3) Perform section maintenance duties including section cleaning, sweeping, raking, blowing, paper-picking, safety inspection and other duties as required, repair of garbage sentinels, picnic tables and seating benches, inspection and repair of playground equipment, litter pick-up, maintenance of drainage systems, animal yard surface repairs, leaf raking and pick-up, snow and ice removal, pavement power-washing, paver maintenance, minor road cold patching, path mulching, and other duties as required.

Assist and participate constructively in all departmental activities, including meetings and irregular and emergency assignments.

Perform daily inspections of assigned areas and report to supervisor as necessary with regard to safety issues, needed repairs, or other problems.

Other related duties as assigned.



Job Requirements:
Position requirements and specifications:
• High school diploma or equivalent combination of training and/or experience required. Associates degree in Horticulture or Ornamental Landscaping preferred.
• Must possess good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Must be reliable, dependable, and flexible.
• Good customer service skills required.
• Experience and/or ability to work and interact effectively with a diverse, multicultural audience. Multi-lingual ability and Spanish fluency a plus.
• A valid driver’s license is required on date of hire. If an Illinois resident, must possess a valid Illinois driver’s license at the time of hire or must obtain one within 90 days of hire. A valid out-of-state driver’s license is required at time of hire for out-of-state residents.
• One or more of the following may be required as noted based on the specific job responsibilities:
• Valid medical authorization card required for positions with Commercial Motor Vehicle driving responsibilities.
• Knowledge of operation and maintenance of irrigation systems.
• Small engine mechanical repair skills.

Additional Information: The incumbent is expected to possess or learn and acquire knowledge and skills needed to perform all tasks at a satisfactory level (or above) in this position within one year of hire. Incumbent must demonstrate proficiency in the safe and correct use of various hand tools such as rakes, brooms, hoes, shovels, hand pruners, saws, loppers, or other hand tools. The correct use of small power equipment such as blowers, mowers, chainsaws, power washers, tillers, snow blowers, weed whips, and other small power tools as assigned is also required. Safe and correct use of small tractors, water wagons, plows and brooms, riding mowers as well as basic operation knowledge of Bobcats and backhoes and other large vehicles or pieces of equipment required. Must become familiar with the CZS Severe Weather Emergency plan. The incumbent is expected to provide positive internal and external customer service, working cooperatively with others to achieve departmental and institutional goals. Maintain an awareness of park schedules and activities to provide assistance to the public as necessary representing the Society in a professional manner at all times. Ensure work areas are safe, clean, and orderly.
