Job Description:
The Grounds Department within Facilities Services is responsible for the overall maintenance and routine care of approximately 255 acres including the Santa Fe College Northwest campus, as well as the college’s six (6) educational centers. The Grounds Department seeks a Groundskeeper to maintain the aesthetic quality and appearance of the College’s grounds and landscaping. The Groundskeeper performs physical labor in all types of weather conditions relating to the upkeep and maintenance of lawns, trees, shrubs, flowerbeds as well as other landscaping and grounds elements. The Groundskeeper is responsible for identifying, selecting, mixing, and applying chemical or manual solutions for control of weeds, insects and/or pests.
Responsibilities and duties:
• Maintain grounds by cutting, mowing, edging, and trimming grass, plants, and shrubs.
• Operate various hand tools and power equipment such as mowers, weed eaters, blowers, tractors, chain saws, and trimmers to maintain grounds.
• Remove litter, debris, leaves, brush, and weeds from drains, walkways, stairs, roadways, parking facilities and other areas.
• Sweep, blow, and rake leaves and debris to ensure clean and safe areas about campus.
• Plant flowers, trees and shrubs; transplant and mulch as necessary.
• Monitor and maintain the watering needs of various landscapes across campuses.
• Identify common landscape weeds and apply control measures to ensure proper removal.
• Prune trees and shrubs using the appropriate techniques according to type.
• Implement landscape improvement projects according to plans.
• Mix and spray or spread fertilizers, herbicides, or insecticides onto grass, shrubs, or trees, using hand or automatic sprayers or spreaders.
• Promote and adhere to all recognized safety practices and standards.
• Provide service excellence through courteous, informed, accessible and professional engagement.
• Assist other trades as necessary.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Reports to: Grounds Superintendent, Facilities Services



Job Requirements:
Required: High School diploma or equivalent with at least one (1) year of closely related work experience is required. Current Department of Environmental Protection applicator license for indoor/outdoor pest control is required or must be obtained within six (6) month of employment. The successful candidate must have a valid Florida Driver License and be able to meet the college's approval to drive guidelines (Driving Requirements). A criminal background check will be conducted.
Preferred: Experience maintaining large grounds is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: This position requires a highly motivated team player with the ability to deliver a high level of interactive customer service, develop and maintain collaborative relationships throughout the College, communicate effectively, as well as proactively solve problems. A working knowledge of fertilizing and spraying techniques, chemicals and pesticides as well as their associated dangers and proper disposal methods are all required. This position must have the demonstrated ability to safely and efficiently operate and maintain trade tools, the ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs., as well as the ability to frequently bend, stoop, stand and walk for extended periods of time in all types of weather. The Groundskeeper must practice personal safety and vigilance in the use of hand and power trade tools, as well as in the identification of safety and security hazards to actively support a safe and hazard free working environment. This position must work well with students, faculty and staff at all levels within a diverse, multi-cultural, collaborative environment.
