Clinical Responsibilities

Maintains optimum quality assurance in all aspects of patient care

See patients with surgeons during office clinics

Assist with patient care, including supervision of pre-op/post-op needs (e.g. labs, EKGs, medication lists, consents, H+Ps)

Triage patient calls and messages as first line of contact for surgeons, and ensures follow-up as necessary in collaboration with surgeon

Working in tandem with the surgeons, triages patient communication for the practice

Is accessible during normal business hours for clinical questions, issues, emergencies

Is available for patient education and questions regarding procedures

Oversees medical assistant activities, including but not limited to: sterile technique, infection control, triage issues, competencies and overall daily activities of the practice (suture removal, tissue expander fills, wound/drain care, dressing changes, patient flow, etc.)

Schedules in-service training for any new procedures and/or equipment

Reviews patient information in Epic pertinent to pre-op and post-op patient care and enters clinical documentation to the Epic as appropriate

Communicates the plan of care and other pertinent information to/from other healthcare providers as requested by the surgeons or program manager.

Serves as a resource for staff in the Division of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Practice as needed

Possess a global awareness of the daily schedule

Participates in the implementation of new clinical techniques/routines and assists in the education, training and evaluation of clinical staff regarding these changes

Maintains clinical competencies based on current nursing standards of care

In collaboration with the Administrative Manager, participates in improvement of patient care services in a cost-effective way

Utilizes resources efficiently to facilitate optimal patient care

Interact in a courteous manner with physicians, nurses, and administrative staff within and outside of the MGH -

Administrative/Supervisory Responsibilities

Oversees the daily operation of the clinic schedule which facilitates the optimal flow of patients.

Provides guidance regarding clinical coverage (MAs) for vacation and unexpected absences

Provides guidance regarding ordering of medical supplies and equipment, maintenance contracts/schedules, etc.

Adheres to requirements for mandatory continuing education and certification in the field of nursing.

Identifies personal learning needs and goals and develops a plan to meet them

Maintains and develops professional practice through continuing educational programs and appropriate learning experiences

Collaborates with Administrative Manager on an ongoing basis

Collaboratively completes annual performance evaluations and competency assessments for the practice clinical staff

Assists in recruitment process for clinical staff



Current licensure as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts

Bachelor's degree

Previous outpatient, ambulatory care experience in surgery or surgery sub-specialty environment


Knowledge of human anatomy and medical terminology

Ability to assess medical history of patient, as well as patient concerns, and to determine any limitations/contraindications

Ability to recognize emergency situations and respond appropriately. Knowledge of locations of emergency equipment and procedures

Able to read and write English

Knowledge of universal precautions

Effective interpersonal and communications skills with attention to detail

Ability to provide compassionate care to patients

Ability to lift over 5 lbs. and possesses knowledge of and practices proper body mechanics

Must demonstrate appropriate knowledge of the principles of growth and development of patients of all age groups. Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served

Based on examinations findings, the ability to recognize, identify, interpret and document normal and abnormal anatomic structures, physiology, pathology and pathophysiology

Ability to question effectively to obtain pertinent medical information

Knowledge of and compliance with MGH, JCAHO, HIPAA, ACGME and other regulatory bodies' standards
