Job Description:
The American Overseas Schools Historical Society (AOSHS) in Wichita, Kansas is looking for a qualified individual to facilitate our Phase One and who is eligible to continue on to our Phase Two:

The AOSHS archivist will sort through acquired collections and historical memorabilia donated worldwide by American overseas schools and work with Board Members in establishing a collection plan, guidelines for retention of materials, and a policy for distribution of unwanted materials prior to digitization and preservation.

The AOSHS archivist will then preserve selected historical records and information to ensure materials are available in the long term. To perform these tasks, the AOSHS archivist will possess the organization skills required to manage large amounts of data and the interpersonal skills to assist researchers. The AOSHS archivist should also possess analytical and research abilities needed to determine which records are worthy of preservation.

The AOSHS digital archivist will locate original materials produced in a variety of formats, including but not limited to photographs, documents, recordings and artwork. He/she will preserve these materials in a digital format for long-term storage and preservation. He/she will also organize records, using a process that involves cataloging them and preparing them for public access. There will be written descriptions of the preserved records that allow researchers to locate materials.

Additionally, the AOSHS digital archivist may create multiple copies of source materials to provide the public with wider access to historical records. He/she might also assist researchers with locating records and suggest the implementation of new technologies that make historically significant documents/materials more readily accessible to the general public.

Job Requirements:
The selected candidate must be able to demonstrate an ability, background and knowledge to initiate a new digital archive program for AOSHS. He/she will assist and advise AOSHS with the purchase of hardware and software to meet the needs of the unique AOSHS archive. He/she must be able to articulate a long term vision of what the archives will accommodate and how it will provide resources for future generations of researchers as well broader based distribution to the public.

He/she may also be enrolled in archival studies and be working on completing an internship, which would provide them the opportunity to work under other experienced digital archivists.

To meet these requirements, he/she must have the following background and skills:

A thorough and up-to-date understanding of digital file formats, electronic records management, and digital persistence practice and theory
Knowledge of electronic records issues, systems analysis, systems development concepts and data storage methods, media, and security
Knowledge of the technical requirements for digital preservations including hardware, software, metadata schema and file formats
Knowledge of forensic technologies utilized by the archival or cultural heritage communities for harvesting managing, and preserving archival and manuscript material
Technical skills: format validations and conversion methods, data integrity techniques and technologies, long term storage planning , and digital asset management systems
Experience with a wide range of computing operating systems , storage systems, and file formats
Working knowledge of software systems related to library digital imaging, management, access and preservation; e.g. Drupal, Fedora, lslandora , Hydra, Archivists' Toolkit, ArchivesSpace, Archivermatica, and MetaArchive
Knowledge of digital preservation standards: PREMIS, OAIS, TOR

The AOSA is dedicated to preserving the history and memorabilia of the kindergarten through grade 12 education of an estimated 4 million American children who attended more than 900 American overseas schools over the past 150 years.
