Job Description:
For our client, a globally acting mining company, we are currently looking for a Manager of Geotechnical Engineering to join their team. You will provide professional geotechnical services to our clients mining operations and development projects worldwide. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Engineering Technical Services, this position will provide strategic and technical input on how to maximize the value of our operations, as well as advise management and operational staff on pertinent geotechnical issues. As travel domestically and internationally will be a significant component of this position, the position location base is negotiable, however, Sudbury would be ideal.
Responsibilities
Oversee the design and review of mine openings, stopes, pillars, and rock mass excavations, using empirical and numerical tools
Supervise the design and review of ground support requirements and standards
Direct the design and review of backfill requirements and QA/QC testing
Overview the review of open pit and waste dump designs pertaining to geotechnical issues
Lead the slope stability analysis and determination using analytical and numerical tools
Manage the implementation of Ground Control Management Plans for each of the mining operations and oversee the annual review and updates
Establish structural stability methods, empirical assessment and numerical modeling to arrive at ultimate support systems and determine optimum pillar sizes and stoping sequences to ensure stability of underground infrastructure
Establish review and provide guidance to sites in geotechnical field investigations, including: geotechnical drilling, geomechanical and soils logging, structural wall mapping, rock mass characterization, photogrammetric surveys and other investigations as required
Provide geotechnical expertise to operations on an as needed bases
Provide leadership and mentoring to geotechnical staff
Keep abreast of latest geotechnical technology and new developments
Provide leadership and strong support on core values and strategic anchors
Other duties may be assigned from time to time
Job Requirements:
Qualifications
BSc Degree in Geological or Mining Engineering, specializing in rock mechanics/geotechnical engineering. (MSc or PhD would be an asset.)
Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in geotechnical engineering (OP & UG)
Minimum of 2 years experience in managing geotechnical/engineering teams
Strong communication skills, both written and oral, with the ability to clearly present and discuss geotechnical aspects with operations personnel and senior management
Excellent organizational and time management skills
Ability to work independently as well as part of a diversified team
Strong work ethic
A good knowledge of numerical modeling tools such as DIPS, UNWEDGE, etc., and the ability to interpret generated data
Proficiency in the use of the MS Office suite including MS Project
Must be willing to travel
